There was a time when personalised number plates were only for the very wealthy, however, it is now possible to obtain a cherished number plate quite easily. In recent years these number plates have become very popular particularly with young people. There is no upper limit on what you might pay, it all depends on what you want but you should be able to buy a very basic plate for around £250.

So, how would you go about choosing a number plate for yourself? A lot depends upon you yourself and what your personality is. You might like to have one with your name, either Christian or surname. It may be that you want a hobby related plate or you may be an avid sports fan and want a plate which represents your favourite team or sport. There are many themes you could choose from and there is bound to be one to suit your personality.

Now that you have chosen a theme, you need to purchase the right number plate at the right price. There are several places to buy cherished plates from but if you wish to use them on your car, you will need to register the plates to your car with the DVLA. There are rules about using different number plates to the ones with which your car is already registered, so do check what these are before buying your plates. Searching the internet can be a good place to begin and you can check out the different sites selling cherished plates. You should also visit the DVLA site to find out how to go about transferring your new plates to your current vehicle. It is always worth checking out the classified ads in motoring press, you never know, what you are looking for could be there.

As a general rule, the fewer letters or numbers on the plate, the more expensive it will be. However, it could also turn out to be a very good investment as it will be in demand. For instance, the name Bobby is popular and there is currently a number plate reading 80 BBY with a price tag in excess of £100,00. However, if you didn't mind shortening Bobby to Bob, you can buy one of those with a combination of other letters and numbers for around £1,000. It is up to you what other letters and numbers appear on the plate as there are several to choose from and you will have your own personal preference here.

Buying a cherished or personalised number plate is not only for the rich, the vain or those just wishing to have yet another status symbol, they are also for those who want a little fun and perhaps even a little nest egg. They are easy to buy and to have registered to your vehicle. There is no time limit on owning them and not using them on a vehicle, but you will need to pay a yearly retention fee to the DVLA. So what are you waiting for, go and search for your perfect number plate today!
