Genetic hair loss is a type of condition that impacts the lives of men and women It is marked by excessive hair loss, which can lead to total baldness in men and severe hair thinning in women.

The focus of genetic hair loss treatment is to discover what is causing the loss of hair and ending it, as well as facilitating regrowth of new hair. Treatment can range from oral tablets to topical applications that provide vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to nourish the scalp and induce hair growth.

Not all treatments will be a success for everyone, but the important thing to note is that unless treatment occurs early, genetic hair loss can become permanent.

There is no cure for genetic hair loss due to it's familial nature. Having a close relative with baldness increases your risk for development of this disorder.

Genetic hair loss treatment options:

Minoxidil:

Monoxidil is a topical application that is most effective when used at onset of androgenetic alopecia . It is available in two percent and five percent solution. The five percent solution has shown forty-five percent more hair growth in men than in women.

Females need to be aware that usage of such treatment can cause the unwanted side effect of facial hair. Once started, this Minoxidil treatment will need to be continued long term otherwise hair loss can return.

Finasteride:

This is an oral treatment suitable only for men. It can cause problems in women with genetic defects to a male fetus. Finasteride has been shown to slow down loss of hair and even to promote regrowth. This treatment should be continued for as long as you want new hair to continue growing back - hair loss will return if the treatment is stopped.

Vasodilators:

These act to expand the blood vessels which allows for more blood to flow to the scalp which helps promote regrowth.

Low level laser light therapy:

This treatment is available over-the-counter and can be done at home. It has been approved by the FDA as a medical device, that can be used to treat hair loss.

Surgical treatment:

For over thirty years now, hair transplants have been successfully performed. The process involves using hair from a donor and transferring it to the head of the person who is suffering from hair loss.

While genetic hair loss is quite common it can be very devastating. If you are showing symptoms of androgenetic alopecia contact your health care provider for proper diagnosis and timely treatment.
